Sister Parish Update December, 2024
The latest eruption of Mount Kanlaon on central Negros Island has not caused any danger to members of our sister parish in Pacuan, Philippines. Recent reports stated that wind direction has been moving away from Pacuan, so they have been able to avoid falling ash. They are, however advised to wear masks when outdoors. The members of St. Vincent of Ferrer ask for continued prayer; for the people in Pacuan as well as the many who are affected by the volcano. They send Warm Christmas greetings and prayer.
We ask for continued prayers for the St. Ignatius
Heart to Heart Mission team currently visiting our
sister parish St. Vincent Ferrer Quasi Parish in Pac-
uan, Philippines. Parish members traveling are Gary Miller, Jessica Magrum, Teeny Emmerich, and Jennifer Braun. The visit is geared towards relationship building, visiting with students including the scholarship recipients, visiting the hospital in preparation for the medical mission in August 2025, and following up on past projects.
Sharing their life changing experiences: Sister Parish ConnectionThe people who traveled to The Philippines on your behalf were happy to share their heartfelt experiences with you these past 8 weeks. If these messages have moved you in any way to become active in this ministry, we welcome you. We need parishioners to pray for this ministry and our brothers and sisters on the other side of the world. Also, if so moved, financial help is appreciated. We are making plans to send another delegation to the Philippines early 2024 and identified people in Pacuan who are considering traveling to Annandale.

“My visit to our sister parish is an experience that I will not soon forget. The people there are so generous with their time and resources little that they have. The occasion that touched me most was when my hostess brought together her whole household as well as employees for a bible lesson. It was humbling for me to see the faith of these people. It reminded me stories in the bible where whole households came to believe in Christ. These people live out their faith every day.

“It was August of 2014. I traveled with my grandson Dominick Braun to Pacuan for 18 days. During that time, we lived, ate, & laughed with a local family. It became apparent that the Catholic Church and people
around the world need the same things. Our friends in Pacuan, even though lacking money and
material things, were the happiest people I have ever met. MONEY & THINGS DO NOT MAKE YOU HAPPY.”
*Gary Miller
“What have I learned from my trips to Pacuan?
(1) People who have very little in material things find true happiness in what is really important: Faith, Family, Friendship. No need for babysitters, nursing homes, cars. Mom and Dad leaving for the day? Kids walk over to the neighbors. Grandma moves in with kids when grandpa dies. Need transport? Stand by the side of the road and the next motorcycle or truck will pick you up. Even if you have nearly nothing, you always have enough to share.
(2) Our Catholic faith is universal no matter the culture. A difference in celebrating the Mass? Starting times are “Filipino time”. Which means around 7:00 give or take 30-40 minutes! Offerings may include chickens, mangos or whatever can be offered. Dogs may wander in for a visit. But the Mass itself, the Liturgy of the Word, the Liturgy of the Eucharist are universal.
(3) Listening to the inner voice that said “go” when logic said “no” was one of the best and most life changing decisions I made at that point in my life. Listen to yours. As I told the husband of one of the
participants on a past trip who told me to “bring her back safely”: I assured him I would, but that she would come back forever changed. Looking for a change in your life?”
*Pam Petersen
After rereading the memory book that I created in 2010, I was reminded of the wonderful journey I took with a small group of St. Ignatius parishioners to meet the members of our Sister Parish in Pacuan, Philippines. Though poor in material things, they were rich in spirit and shared all that they had. James 2:5 “Listen, my brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor to the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those that love Him?”
Indeed, our little group witnessed their faith and love of God. The most memorable example of this was when we attended two weddings and at both events the parents insisted we take the front seats while they sat in the back. It was very hard to show them graceful acceptance of this gift. However we accepted and their generous action reminded us that they see the face of Christ in all.
I am also reminded of their sense of humor. One of our hosts said that Pacuan is so high in the mountains that it is only 10 kilometers from Heaven. Since there were no doors on the church, another said the reason the dogs were so well behaved was they could go to church at any time. Ha. The little community not only provided time for reflection, plenty of food and water, but much opportunity for fun. A highlight was being part of their youth night. After a lighted rosary was recited, a stage was opened for singing and dancing by many talented youth. Electricity was rigged for this temporary stage and our little group even created a song and dance for the celebration.
The country is beautiful, the people are lovely and we were blessed to be their guests.
*Diane Fournier, 2010What does it mean to "BE"? This is why I decided to make the trip to Pacuan Phillipines. I wanted a reason for making the trip. Father Victor would only tell me “Diane you need to go just to "BE”. I wasn’t sure what he meant by “BE”. But once I was there it was obvious; I was to BE with the people and build a relationship with them. Our relationship with our sister parish is the primary purpose of the Sister Parish Mission Team. I hope if you are considering the mission trip, you understand how to “BE”. In addition, I had the wonderful privilege of traveling with my daughter, Morgan, who was 17 at the time. It was amazing to share the whole journey with her. She had her own unique experiences and as a parent it was a joy to go with her. Please prayerfully ask the Lord if this is something that He might be calling you to do.
Prayerfully consider making the journey to meet our brothers and sisters in Pacuan. For more information contact the Parish Office.
